Cattle

The undeniable stars of our Croft!

Our native cattle are essential in managing our meadows and woods. Their primary job is to graze and fertilise our pastures.

We aim to keep just enough cattle to increase biodiversity and improve existing pasture while avoiding overgrazing and soil compaction.

Through summer they are moved frequently into small temporary paddocks, keeping them in fresh meadow. The grazed pasture then has plenty time to grow back.

We check on them throughout the day and move them on when they are ready.

In winter, our pasture stops growing so we keep fewer cattle.

They’re from hardy stock and can easily cope with living outside all winter; sheltering in our woods and fed with locally sourced hay.
